Ed Tech: Gamification

What is Gamification?

Gamification is becoming very popular today for teachers around the world. This craze has helped teachers and educators get creative in teaching material to their students. But why is gamification so popular? And what exactly is it? According to Interaction-Design, gamification is the process of turning learning material into gameplay and educators are considering this technique because of the impact gamification has on the student’s overall performance.

Over the past year, I have been studying and learning more about what gamification is and how this technique can benefit teachers and educators. As an instructional designer, creating materials that involve gaming has become the norm. Subject Matter Experts have requested Instructional Designers to create material that engages their learners and promotes their learning and gamification, does just that. Gamification brings learning to a new level and captivates and motivates a student into learning.

Gamification has become very popular and because I have had the privilege of studying this technique to make my work more inviting, I thought why not share this technique with other educators as well. So, I have decided to make this topic a part of a small series for our Know My World newsletter, and share with you different ways that you can use gamification in your classroom. This series will include:

  • Is gamification right for your classroom
  • How can you implement this technique into your teachings
  • The keys to gamification
  • Games and applications that are right for your classroom

So I look forward to this upcoming series and hope you will come along with me!
