Global Education in the Classroom

POleni

My classroom is always set to give every student access to quality education regardless of their status (family, socio-economic, etc.). Both boys and girls including students with special educational needs have equal opportunities to learn. Our curriculum embeds the concept of sustainability in the daily practice of the teacher in the classroom. For instance, students learn how to preserve water, food and other things, keep materials clean and safe to avoid spoilage, keeping the environment clean and green, personal hygiene and sanitation, maintaining good health, etc. The students get the idea of using things for long by taking good care of them (content is delivered in an age-appropriate way including choice of words). And most of the lessons are conducted practically.

I have had the opportunity to participate in virtual cross-cultural exchange programs through Know My World. My students from Uganda shared very useful educational experiences with students from Guadalajara/Monterrey in 2014. Again, through Know My World when I moved to Northern Tanzania, my students were able to engage in an exchange program with students from Hong Kong in 2016. My students did a study with local farmers, wrote a report through group work and shared with students from Hong Kong. My students were able to:

  • Acquire basic ICT skills
  • Learn and appreciate the cultures of other people (instilling a spirit of acceptance of diversity)
  • Learn communication and collaboration skills
  • Learn basic research skills
  • Gain mastery of contents in school curriculum
  • Appreciate environmental conservation (water, land, trees, wildlife)
  • Appreciate economic development in different places
