Nepal and USA: Understanding Climate Change

In a six week exchange middle school students (ages 10-13) in New York and Nepal worked together to understand and combat global warming. The exchange started by pairing students – one student from New York, one student from Nepal. They used Flipgrid to give self-introductions.

The following week the exchange began and students were posed with the question “ What is global warming and how is it changing?” Students wrote their answers down to share with the opposite class. A student from Nepal describes Global Warming at the following:

Weeks 3 and 4 students were asked the following discussion questions. “How does global warming affect the world” and “How does global warming affect my city?” They needed to decide how, based off their definition of global warming, it was affecting on a larger international scale and a more local personal scale. Students were able to discuss and debate these questions in class and write their answers down to share with the opposite class.  Another student from Nepal explains to us how global warming is affecting his city.

The 5th week students were asked to discuss how they could solve global warming and educate others. They shared ideas for solutions and things that they can do.

During the final week students participated in a gallery walk. They took all of the content from the previous weeks and laid it out like an art exhibition for further discussion on the outcome of the project. Classes were able to connect together via Zoom to discuss final comments on the exchange and to further their relationships.
