Oil Spill: High School Students Take On Solutions

  • Post author:

Secondary students (age, 16 years old) from Philippines and Mexico created projects/presentations around a solution to oil spills. Additionally, via Facebook and structured questions, students personally related and connected with one another. Students collectively researched and shared solutions to oil spills. A picture of each solution was shared on Facebook with captions which explained the concern/problem.

The groups then researched their chosen oil spill effect and created a flyer to explain a possible solution. Together, each class took the original image/descriptions and information from the flyers and made one big presentation. The presentations varied but explained oil spills, what they were, who they have affected, and how we can minimize their negative effects.

The images, flyers, and presentations were uploaded to Facebook for each class of students to be able to view them. Students interacted, commented, and discussed their projects through the online exchange.

Common Project Goals:
Both classrooms will be creating presentations around a solution to oil spills. Each teacher would like for their students to related and connect with other students from another culture.
Project Description:
Students will collectively research and share the causes and effects of oil spills, long term effects of oil spills, and solutions to oil spills. The groups will research their given topics to create pictures, flyers, and a presentation of how their solution will help the problems of oil spills. Collectively, each class will take the presentations and make one big presentation to present to the other class.
Project Plan of Action:
Starter: Students will join the Facebook group
Week 1 (October 12-16): Culture Question – Students will respond to a question prompt posted by teachers. (Students from each class may be put into small groups to encourage introductions.)
Week 2 (October 19-23): Philippines class will research cases of oil spills and why they happened in or around the Philippines. Mexico will do the same but in or around Mexico. Each class will find where these cases exist around their countries and create a flyer to share their findings with the other class. Flyers will be posted to Facebook by Friday, October 23rd.
Week 3 (October 26-30): Philippines class will research the effects of oil spills in or around the Philippines. Mexico will do the same but in or around Mexico. Each class will find where these cases exist around their countries and share a picture with a caption of their findings with the other class. Pictures with the captions will be posted to Facebook by Friday, October 30th.
Week 4 (November 2-6): Both classes will create their own presentation with their findings and then create a class presentation to share their solutions with the other class. (This sharing may happen on Facebook or using another more academic resource.)
Facebook: Throughout their research process students will be answering a question prompt posted by teachers on Facebook. These prompts will encourage students to interact within the group and with one another.
